Description

Prisoner name: Robert Dutton.

Prisoner age: 26 years.

Prisoner occupation: Porter.

Court and date of trial: Old Bailey, 18 May 1836.

Crime: Stealing from employer. Waste paper, value £5, property of Messers Rivington and Company.

Initial sentence: Seven years transportation.

Gaoler's report: 'Character not known. Married 4 children'.

Annotated (Outcome): 'Ordered to Penitentiary 23 June 1836'. In the Penitentiary. Nil.

Petitioner(s): The prisoner's wife Elizabeth Dutton, 4 Fitget's Court, Noble Street, City of London, undersigned with four character references from former employers. Elizabeth Dutton, undersigned by five supporters. Elizabeth Dutton, 8 King Street, Bartholomew Close [London].

Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): The prisoner has a family dependent upon him; the prisoner is of previous good character; he has behaved well in prison; the prisoner has employment to go to if released.

Other papers: Character reference from James Maine, 44 Stanhope Street, Clare Market [London], and letter from Elizabeth Dutton, both forwarded in a letter from [Thomas Thornely], Liverpool. Letter from William Barton, Liverpool, forwarding petition.
