Description

Prisoner name: William Duffield.

Prisoner occupation: Pauper.

Court and date of trial: Essex Quarter Sessions, April 1836.

Crime: Riot. Opposing the execution of the New Poor Law Act with five other people.

Initial sentence: Three months imprisonment.

Annotated (Outcome): Remission prepared 4 June 1836.

Petitioner(s): 10 inhabitants of Great Holland, Essex, including the minister, churchwarden and county magistrate [George Busmester].

Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): The prisoner had intended to emigrate to Canada with his family; the parish will assist in advancing the cost of emigration.

Other papers: Letter from George Busmester, Little Oakley Rectory.
