Date

1836 - 1841

Description

Prisoner name: John Davis and George Ravenhill.

Prisoner age: Davis: 19 or 20 years. Ravenhill: 16 or 14 years.

Court and date of trial: Central Criminal Court, April Sessions 1836.

Crime: Stealing in a dwelling house.

Initial sentence: Transportation for life.

Gaoler's report: Davis: 'In custody before'. Ravenhill: 'Not known'.

Annotated (Outcome): Davis: 'New South Wales'. Ravenhill: 'Van Diemens Land'.

Petitioner(s): Ann Gunn, 'late Ann Davis', mother of John Davis, and Mary Ravenhill, sister of George Ravenhill, both of 8 Maidstone Street, Goldsmith's Row, Hackney Fields, undersigned by prosecutors Samuel Standfast (or Samuel Steadfast) and Robert Gunn, and 14 local people. Robert Gunn, undersigned by six supporters.

Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): The prisoners are sons of widowed mothers; Ravenhill's mother died of a 'broken heart' following his conviction; this is the prisoners' first offence, being led astray by bad influences including the Ravenhill family; the change in trial time meant the prisoners were convicted without character references; the stolen property was restored; the sentence is severe; Samuel Standfast will give the prisoners employment if released; the prosecutors were reluctant to prosecute.
