Description

Prisoner name: James Davies.

Prisoner age: 27 years.

Court and date of trial: Pembroke Lent Assizes, March 1836.

Crime: Manslaughter. Victim Thomas Ebsworth.

Initial sentence: Seven years transportation.

Gaoler's report: 'Character not known'.

Annotated (Outcome): Ordered to Penitentiary 30 May 1836. Nil.

Petitioner(s): Three petitions from the prisoner's mother Jane Davies of Curnyrath (or Cumrath), Amroath (or Amroth) Narbeth, Pembrokeshire. 67 supporters. Seven supporters including local magistrates and clergy.

Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): The prisoner has an aged and widowed mother dependent upon him; the prisoner is of previous good character with respectable connections; the prisoner and the victim were inebriated at the time of the crime and the prisoner acted in self-defence; the prisoner has behaved well whilst confined; the prisoner is contrite.
