Description

Prisoner name: Robert Crawley.

Prisoner age: 22 years.

Court and date of trial: Essex Lent Assizes, March 1836.

Crime: Robbery. Assaulting and robbing James Medley on the highway, taking 4d, one purse and other articles, at Writtle, Essex.

Initial sentence: Sentence commuted to seven years transportation.

Gaoler's report: 'Bad Character. Twice before in prison'.

Annotated (Outcome): 'Nil'.

Petitioner(s): The prisoner, undersigned by 42 local supporters from Chelmsford, Essex, and environs.

Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): The prisoner maintains he is innocent and of good character.

Other papers: Three depositions from Mary Welch, Thomas Welch and Ann Welch.

Additional Information: Prisoner 'ordered to Fortitude' convict hulk. Prisoner tried with Thomas Cooper.
