The Legal Department was frequently required to provide advice or legal opinion on issues raised by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food's business divisions. Usually, the record of this advice appears on the registered files of the division concerned, but occasionally significant policy or procedural matters were discussed on the unregistered Legal Department files which were not copied to the lead division, and it is these records which are preserved in this series. By their nature, the records cover a wide range of topics.
