Administrative / biographical background

These files were created by the Manpower Branch of the Economics and Statistics Division of the Ministry of Technology which was set up in 1966.

By 1967 the Branch had changed its name to Scientific and Technological Statistics (ES 2) and by 1970, when the Division split into Economics and Statistics A and Economics and Statistics B, it was allocated the code ESA3.

When the Department of Trade and Industry was established in October 1970 the department inherited economics and statistics branches from both the Ministry of Technology and the Board of Trade. In June 1971 it was decided to integrate these branches with the establishment of four"mixed" economic/statistical divisions, one"pure" economics division and one"pure" statistics division.

Responsibility for qualified manpower remained with the Department of Industry (set up in 1974) and later the second Department of Trade and Industry (set up in 1983) through the 1970s and 1980s.

It is assumed that these files were inherited by the Office for National Statistics, formerly the Central Statistical Office and the Office of Population Censuses and Surveys, because of the former's interest in statistics and manpower.

The files are in the CJ and CI series although there has been some re-registration of the CJ files from an earlier KM series with three part file numbers.
