This series consists of registered files of the Foreign Office Consular Department (January to March 1967), the Joint Foreign Office/Commonwealth Office Consular Department (March 1967 to October 1968) and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office Consular Department (October 1968 onwards). They are the London headquarters end of correspondence with UK consular representative overseas. From March 1967 the series includes Commonwealth as well as foreign consular affairs.

Arrangement is by former file reference. The K series files in this series are a continuation of earlier K series records created in the Foreign Office, but from January 1967 the registration system used was altered from the earlier 'jacket' system to a registered file system in preparation for the formation of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in October 1968. Records in the K series created by the Foreign Office Consular Department were inherited by a joint Foreign Office/Commonwealth Office Consular Department (in which the Foreign Office was the lead department) which was established in March 1967, using the KO file series.

This was replaced by a Foreign and Commonwealth Office Consular Department on the creation of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in October 1968, which inherited both the K and the KO series files. A new GK series was used by the FCO Consular Department from October 1968.
