from 1999 Foreign and Commonwealth Office
The Gibraltar and South Atlantic Department was formed as part of the Dependent Territories Division (i.e. former Colonial Office) of the Commonwealth Office following its creation in August 1966, and handled all UK and Commonwealth interests in Antarctica, the South Atlantic islands and Gibraltar.
In October 1968, when the Foreign and Commonwealth Office was formed, the department continued largely unchanged, (although responsibility for the external relations of Gibraltar passed to the Western European Department). The department remained in being until 1971 when it was absorbed into a new Atlantic and Indian Ocean Department.
