This series contains registered files produced by the various branches that have managed the Crown's urban estates in England and Wales. While the main focus of the series is on London, where the estates include many properties of architectural or historical significance, properties outside of London are also represented. As these tend to be properties purchased by The Crown Estate as investments, the files concerning their management tend to be more uniform and routine, and fewer have therefore been preserved.

As estate management files covering properties managed by The Crown Estate and its predecessors over many years, the files have accumulated piecemeal. In some cases where the start date of the file is in the nineteenth or early twentieth century, the earlier papers will considerably pre-date the opening of the file, having been added at a later date, often after having been removed from earlier files.
