Administrative / biographical background

The Interdepartmental Social Work Group was a temporary group, set up by the Department of Health and Social Security and Home Office, and sitting in the DHSS. The Group was set out to implement the changes introduced by the Local Authority Social Services Act 1970, which in turn was in response the Report of the Committee on Local Authority and Allied Personal Social Services (Cmnd 3703). This report recommended the unification, within each local authority, of the organisation of all personal social services.
