The file series originated in the Office for Wales of the Department of Trade and Industry. When responsibility for industrial matters passed to the Welsh Office in 1975, the series was inherited by the Industry Department which continued to use it until 1995. Selected files relate to individual firms that have had a major impact on the development of industry in Wales. These include the nuclear powers stations at Trawsfynydd and Wylva, the Hoover factories at Merthyr Tydfil and open cast mining around Carmarthen.
