Description

This series contains the reports of the Quality Assessment Division of the Higher Education Funding Council for England. There are three types of records. Quality assessment reports are a series of subject specific reports for individual institutions. Subject overview reports give details on assessment of the subject and list all institutions which have been assessed. Assessors' handbooks give guidelines to assessors on the method of assessment and administrative procedures.

Administrative / biographical background

Under the Further and Higher Education Act 1992, the Higher Education Funding Council for England became responsible for assessing the quality of education provided in institutions it funded, or was considering funding. A method for assessing quality was developed, intending to enhance the quality of education and give better public information, The Quality Assessment Division was established to carry out a programme of assessments, working in partnership with the institution and assessors.

In October 1997, the function of quality assessment was transferred from the Higher Education Funding Council for England to an independent agency, the Quality Assessment Agency.
