The Export Promotions Department was formed in October 1968 to exercise functions relating to trade promotion previously exercised by the Economic Relations Department of the Foreign Office and the Commonwealth Trade Department of the Commonwealth Office. The department dealt with the organisation, training and operations of the overseas Government Commercial Service, and handled policy and procedural questions for commercial posts. The department merged in 1973 with the Trade Policy Department to become the Trade Relations and Export Department, at which time the MX series was discontinued.
