This series consists of the registered files of the Trade Policy Department and its successor the Trade Relations and Export Department. The records relate to general economic and commercial questions of international relations, including tariffs, preference systems and non-tariff trade barriers, tourism and relations with the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT), the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the United Nations Commission for Trade and Development (UNCTAD) and the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (ECE).
From 1999 Foreign and Commonwealth Office
The Trade Policy Department was formed in October 1968 at the establishment of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, assuming responsibilities formerly exercised by the Economic Relations Department of the Foreign Office and the Commonwealth Trade Department of the Commonwealth Office. The department also represented the FCO on various Whitehall economic committees and bodies. In 1973 it merged with the Export Promotion Department to form the Trade Relations and Export Department, which continued to use the MT registered file series.
