The Pacific and Indian Ocean Department of the Commonwealth Office continued with essentially unaltered responsibilities after October 1967 in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. In January 1971, a reorganisation took place to more evenly distribute work between departments. Responsibility for Mauritius, the Seychelles and the British Indian Ocean Territory passed to a new Atlantic and Indian Ocean Department, and the department dealing with UK dependencies in the Pacific was renamed the Pacific Dependent Territories Department.
