Description

Prisoner name: Samuel Young.

Prisoner age: 15 years.

Court and date of trial: Somerset Lent Assizes, Taunton, March 1833.

Crime: Rape, of a child of 'tender years'.

Initial sentence: Death recorded and commuted to transportation for life.

Gaoler's report: 'Character indifferent'.

Annotated (Outcome): 'Ordered to the York'[convict hulk]; 'nil'.

Petitioner(s): Henry Webb Shillibeer ([solicitor] on behalf of the convict's father), two applications; 34 inhabitants of [Taunton] including three parish officers with a second application by 24 of those inhabitants.

Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): His age; previous unimpeachable character; his distressed parents; his total ignorance of the penalty for the crime; it was probably carried out in the folklore belief that a diseased person having connexion with a very young person will eradicate that disease; seduced by the girl; crime not satisfactorily proved.
