Description

Prisoner name: William Bunbury Lavers.

Prisoner age: 46 years.

Prisoner occupation: Former naval seaman.

Court and date of trial: Old Bailey, July 1832.

Crime: Forging a receipt for £1,171 17s 0d in the name of Captain Francis Cosgrave and obtaining the money in his name [from the Army Pay Office].

Initial sentence: Transportation for life.

Gaoler's report: 'Not known here'.

Annotated (Outcome): 'Removed to Penitentiary'. 'Nil'.

Petitioner(s): William Bunbury Lavers (the convict) with one signed copy. 16 inhabitants of the Parish of St Thomas, Exeter, Devon. Emilie Therese Lavers (wife) of Kennington. Lord Russell on behalf of the Army Pay Office which suffered the fraud.

Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): His claim for restitution of £1,500 0s 0d costs incurred by Captain Robert Gresley (his late grandfather) during 1761, 1762 and 1763 and not reimbursed by the government was dismissed as being out of time; his consequent despair of success induced him to the crime; he has a family in deep distress; he is incompetent to hard labour and is in ill-health; his assistance to the Army Pay Office relating to his crime.

Other papers: Letter from [Lord Wellesley] transmitting a petition to the Home Department. Letter from Lord Elrington transmitting a petition to [Lord Grey] with a letter from Edward Blount forwarding the said petition to the Home Department.

Additional Information: He served on board HM Ships Astrea, Terror, Neptune and Barfleur. An account is given of his grandfather's service as Governor of Goree and Senegal when the costs were incurred.
