The Defence Department handled overseas defence issues in the Foreign Office, including consideration of defence white papers, relations with the Ministry of Defence and the services Chiefs of Staff and attachés, and dealings with other states on collaborative defence and aerospace projects.
The department was wound up in October 1968, and merged with the Commonwealth Office Defence Department to form two new departments in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO): the Defence Policy Department and the Defence Training and Supply Department. In 1970 these were in turn merged to form the FCO Defence Department.
