West Indian Department 'A' of the Commonwealth Office handled UK relations with the states which were progressing towards a form of self-government as Associated States in the Caribbean (Dominica, Grenada, St Vincent, St Lucia, Antigua, and St Kitts-Nevis-Anguilla). In February 1967, these island states together became Associated States of the Commonwealth with a large measure of independence from the UK, which however remained responsible for their external relations and some other matters. The name of the department was changed to Associated States Department to reflect this.
The department was abolished in October 1968 on the creation of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, and from this date relations with these states were handled by the North American and Caribbean Department.
