Administrative / biographical background

The Western Organisations and Co-ordination Department was abolished in name in October 1968 when the Foreign and Commonwealth Office was created. Its functions, however, passed virtually intact to a new Western Organisations Department, which handled relations as before with NATO, the WEU and the Council of Europe, and questions of European security and political unity. Some functions relating to planning and co-ordination passed to the Planning Staff.
