ADM 1/3997 consists of reports to the Admiralty from the Office established by the 1696 Register Act to register merchant seamen for naval service, 1696-1699, and from the Navy Board, 1699-1702, winding up the Register Office's residual business after its transfer to Greenwich Hospital in 1699, plus the residual business of the Sick and Hurt Board transferred to the Register Office, 1698. There is also correspondence from the Sixpenny Office, 1704-1715. ADM 1/3998 contains reports from the General Register Office of Merchant Seamen established by the 1835 Merchant Shipping Act, and transferred to the Board of Trade in 1850.
