The Western Department of the Foreign Office was expanded upon the creation of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, absorbing functions concerning UK relations with Finland, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Iceland, Switzerland, Austria and Liechtenstein from the Foreign Office Central Department when it was abolished and with Ireland from the Commonwealth Office Atlantic Department. The Department was re-named the Western European Department. Responsibility for relations with Andorra passed to the Southern European Department in 1969, and for relations with Ireland to a new Republic of Ireland Department in 1972.
