The Victualling Board was responsible for the supply of victuals and other consumable stores to the Navy. In the eighteenth century it reported to the Navy Board more often than directly to the Admiralty. These letters from the Board to the Admiralty, 1822-1832 deal only with victualling and not with the naval medical service for which the Board was then also responsible. ADM 1/3801-3809, 1833-1839, are reports from the Controller of Victualling and Transport Services, covering both victualling and transports, convict ships and packets. Some letters from the Victualling Board to the Admiralty for various dates between 1703 and 1822 are in the National Maritime Museum. In-letters from public offices, 1802-1807, are indexed and digested in ADM 12/29-34.
When using the ADM 12 indexes to search for papers in ADM 1, documents in this sub-sub-series often have the references: 'D.V.', 'V. Bd.', 'Vg. Bd.', 'Comp. Vit.', 'C. of V.'
