The Principal Officers and Commissioners of the Navy, commonly known as the Navy Board, were responsible for the dockyards, for the building and repair of ships, for finance and accounts, for all naval supplies other than food and munitions, and for theappointment of some warrant officers. Though subordinate to the Admiralty, the Navy Board was by far the larger, older and administratively the more important of the two, and always preserved a large measure of independence.
These are the original in-letters, with enclosures, received by the Admiralty from the Navy Board. (The continuation of this series, 1738-1832, was transferred to the National Maritime Museum. The texts of these letters may be consulted in the Navy Board Out-Letter Books, ADM 106/2178-2296, which are somewhat more complete, but do not include enclosures). ADM 1/3653-3654, appended to this series, contains some original correspondence from the Navy Board on the eve of its dissolution, together with copies of letters in the National Maritime Museum. In-letters from public offices, 1802-1807, are indexed and digested in ADM 12/29-34.
When using the ADM 12 indexes to search for papers in ADM 1, documents in this sub-sub-series have the references: 'N. Off.' or 'N. Bd.'
