The Commissioners for Sick and Wounded Seamen, generally known as the Sick and Hurt Board, were responsible for the naval medical service and the care of prisoners of war of both services. Until 1739 the Board existed only in wartime, and its residual responsibilities in peacetime were dealt with by the Navy Board. These volumes contain the surviving letters of the Sick and Hurt Board to the Admiralty.
In ADM 1/3997 are reports from the Register-Office, 1696-1699, and from the Navy Office, 1699-1702, which include the residual business of the Sick and Hurt Board abolished in 1698. Further correspondence from the Sick and Hurt Board to the Admiralty, 1742-64 and 1794-1806, is in the National Maritime Museum.
When using the ADM 12 indexes to search for papers in ADM 1, documents in this sub-sub-series have the references: 'Sc. Wd. Bd.' or 'Sc. H. Bd.'
