Description

General Samuel Bentham was appointed in 1795 Inspector-General of Naval Works, with a brief to introduce machinery and new working practices into the dockyards. He interpreted his instructions generously, and reported not only on the yard but on naval inventions and improvements in general. The post was abolished in 1808.
