The Royal Naval Academy (from 1806, Royal Naval College), Portsmouth, was established in 1733 to provide professional training for a limited number of future officers. These letters are from the Commissioner, later Superintendent, of the yard who was exofficio Governor of the Academy, reporting on its affairs. There are detailed reports on the progress of the scholars, and on candidates for admission. In 1837 the College in its old form was abolished, and in ADM 1/3521 is correspondence concerning the winding-up of its affairs.
