Description

In 1832 the Office of Surveyor of Buildings, soon changed to Architect, was established to take over the responsibilities for naval buildings and civil engineering previously exercised by the Navy Board. These letters, like others from the departments inherited from the Navy Board, are technically internal correspondence within the Admiralty.

When using the ADM 12 indexes to search for papers in ADM 1, documents in this sub-sub-series have the reference: 'Arch.'
