Administrative / biographical background

Prior to 1800, three unconnected Foot Regiments bore the identification number of 100th Foot. The first 100th Regiment of Foot was raised in c1760 and disbanded in 1763. A second regiment was raised in 1780 and disbanded in 1785. A third regiment was formed in 1794 as the 100th (Gordon Highlanders) Regiment of Foot, which continued until 1798 when renumbered as the 92nd Foot.

In 1804, a new 100th Foot was formed. In 1812 this was renamed the 100th (HRH the Prince Regent's County of Dublin) Regiment of Foot. In 1816 this 100th Foot was renumbered the 99th (HRH the Prince Regent's County of Dublin) Regiment of Foot, thus replacing the existing 99th Foot which, also in 1816, was renumbered 98th.

In 1816 when the existing 100th Regiment of Foot was renumbered 99th Foot, the 102nd Regiment of Foot was renumbered as the 100th Foot before being disbanded in 1818.

In 1858, another 100th Foot was formed: the 100th (Prince of Wales's Royal Canadian) Regiment of Foot. In 1881 this was linked to the 109th (Bombay Infantry) Regiment to form The Prince of Wales's Leinster Regiment (Royal Canadians).
