Prior to 1800, three unconnected Foot Regiments bore the identification number of 95th Foot. The first regiment, raised in 1760 under Colonel Ralph Burton from independent companies in North America, was disbanded in 1763. A second regiment raised in 1780 under Colonel John Reid was disbanded in 1783. A third regiment was formed in 1793 under Major-General Edmeston, and disbanded in 1796.
In 1800 the next foot regiment to be termed 95th was originally formed as a Corps of Riflemen (also known as the Rifle Corps) by detachments from various regiments, before being numbered the 95th (Rifle) Regiment in 1802. In 1816 the regiment was renamed the Rifle Brigade.
In 1816 when the existing 95th Regiment of Foot was styled the Rifle Brigade, the 96th Regiment of Foot (which had been formed in 1802 from the 2nd Battalion 52nd Foot) was renumbered 95th Foot, before being disbanded in 1819.
In 1823, another 95th Regiment of Foot was formed (from 1825, known as the 95th or Derbyshire Regiment of Foot). In May 1881 this regiment was linked to the 45th Regiment of Foot to become The Derbyshire Regiment (Sherwood Foresters).
