Responsibility for local government matters passed to the Welsh Office on its formation after 1964. The Local Government, Water and Sewerage Division carried out this function, as a separate division until 1974, when it became part of the Local Government and Housing Group. Further name changes took place in 1977, and at this point the Group became Local Government, General and Housing Group.
Initially this division was responsible for all contact between the Welsh Office and Local Authorities, but as more responsibilities passed to the Welsh Office during the 1970s and 1980s its remit became more general.
