The Western Economic Department of the Commonwealth Office handled the United Kingdom's economic relations with Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Ireland and Cyprus, particularly in respect of trade in wool, meat, grain and dairy produce. The Department had responsibility for managing trade relations with these states in respect of Britain's relations with the European Economic Community, the European Free Trade Association and the North Atlantic Free Trade Area.
