The International and General Department of the Dependent Territories Division of the Commonwealth Office dealt with relations between the Commonwealth and the United Nations, matters relating to international labour conventions, the treatment of offenders and general matters affecting all dependent territories. Following the merger of the Commonwealth Office and the Foreign Office on 17 October 1968, the department was abolished, and its functions were distributed among various Foreign and Commonwealth Office departments, principally the United Nations (Political) Department.
