The former Colonial Office Constitutional Planning Department became the Dependent Territories Constitutions Department upon the formation of the Commonwealth Office in August 1966. It handled future constitutional policy questions, the co-ordination of constitutional development, new constitutional patterns and the progress of constitutional business through the UK legislative programme.
The department was merged into the Commonwealth Policy and Planning Department in March 1968. Upon the formation of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in October 1968 responsibility for constitutional development passed to the Commonwealth Co-ordination Department.
