Description

Folios 692-695. Letter from Mr Gething and Mr Cripwell, members of the committee appointed by the vestry and ratepayers of the parish of Mansfield Woodhouse, Mansfield Poor Law Union, to the Poor Law Commission [Poor Law Board], regarding vaccination fees. They complain that an exorbitant sum was made against their parish for vaccinations at the last audit and was discussed at a vestry meeting. The medical officer in question stated that he has got the money and will keep it. On examining a copy of the book of the persons vaccinated they found that a great number of the number of them should not have been charged to the parish. A report was made and sent to the Mansfield board but they have had no official reply. They enclose a copy of the report.

The report complains that the bulk of the people vaccinated are in a position to pay and ask does the act empower the medical officer to pauperize them by charging them to the parish and are they obliged to pay. There was also a lot of people charged who are workers at Hollins and Company's Mill and who have a medical club themselves, the medical officer in question is their medical attendant, who for a fixed payment per head, per year, gives them all the medical aid they require.

They think the law is defective and the local boards should be instructed to transmit to charges affecting each separate parish to the overseers, who in turn should put the charges before the parishioners for examination before they are paid. They request that the last audit be re-opened and these accounts revised.

Also included is an extract from the medical register of vaccinations performed in the parish of Mansfield Woodhouse for the half year ending 25/3/63, it includes names, ages, some parishes and the cost charged for the vaccinations.
