Description

Folios 669-670. Letter from Thomas S Ludlow, Roseland, Mansfield, Mansfield Poor Law Union, to the Poor Law Board. He writes on behalf of himself and the ratepayers of the parish of Upper Langwith, in which his farm of 390 acres is situated. He expresses concern that the overseers of Sutton in Ashfield parish have applied to the Board to re-open the Mansfield Union accounts so that Sutton in Ashfield may have credit of £213 14s 4d, Mansfield £47 17s 10d and Hucknall under Huthwaite, £20 17s 2d, under the Union Relief Aid Act, 25& 26 Vict c 110.

He complains that if these parishes are entitled to these sums then they should have made a claim at the Michaelmas audit of 1862. He explains that he did not become an occupier in Upper Langwith until Lady Day 1863, the land was previously occupied by John Victkers; it would therefore be unjust to re-open the Mansfield accounts and charge the present ratepayers for the debt which should have been charged to ratepayers at the time of the debt.
