Description

Folio 660. Letter from Thomas Alcock, ratepayer, Mansfield Woodhouse, Mansfield Poor Law Union, to the Poor Law Board. Alcock became the occupier of a farm of 124 acres in the Woodhouse parish and had been informed that the overseer's of Sutton in Ashfield, Mansfield and Hucknall under Huthwaite, have asked the Board to re-open the accounts of the Mansfield Union so that they may have credit for £276 4s 0d, under the Union Relief Aid Act. Of this sum he is informed that his parish will be asked to contribute £31 12s 0d, he comments that the ratepayers of Mansfield Woodhouse cannot legally be called upon to pay under the above act and objects to it being allowed. He also appeals against the allowance made to Sutton in Ashfield, Mansfield and Hucknall under Huthwaite for the quarter ended Michaelmas 1862 and he intends to prosecute in case the accounts are re-opened and the previous quarter allowed.

Annotated: decline re-opening the audit of the Michaelmas accounts. The case of Queen vs Chiddingstone, [Kent], suggests that the auditor is not compelled to do so, no grounds for the guardians to do so in this case.

Paper Number: 35826/1863.

Poor Law Union Number: 337.

Counties: Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire.
