Folios 658-659. Draft letter from the Poor Law Board to Mr William Goodacre, Clerk to the Guardians of the Mansfield Poor Law Union, acknowledging receipt of his letter of 26 September 1863, with its enclosure regarding the proposal of the assessment committee of the Mansfield Union to appoint professional valuers' to assist them under section 20, of the Union Assessment Committee Act 1862. The Board have reconsidered the opinion given in their letter of 18 September 1863 and cannot advise further. The statute has provided the means of procuring valuations of parishes and if they are not applicable the committee should receive the valuation lists from the overseer's and use their own judgement in revising or settling them. If they are not satisfied that the valuations returned by the overseer's are incorrect, they are not required by law to alter them.
