Folios 31-32. Letter from W E Goodacre, Clerk to the Guardians of the Mansfield Poor Law Union, to the Poor Law Board, enclosing a petition from the guardians.
The Mansfield union has parishes in both Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire, and problems arise because other unions in the counties levy different poor rates. At Lady Day 1867, the Mansfield rate will be 2s in the £1, while the average of other unions is 1s 4d in the £1, some being as low as 7d or 8d in the £1. Mansfield has only 21 parishes, some of them having few or no paupers while others are manufacturing parishes with a great many paupers, which increase the average expenditure. The parishes with the greatest number of resident paupers have only a small acreage and fewer properties to be assessed for the poor rate. The guardians ask that counties may be made the area for rating settlement, and not the unions.
Annotated: acknowledge and then sent to the President, Gathorne Hardy, MP.
Paper Number: 7070/1867.
Poor Law Union Number: 337.
Counties: Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire.
