Folios 605-606. Letter from William E Goodacre, Clerk to the Guardians of the Mansfield Poor Law Union, to the Poor Law Board, replying to letter dated 31 January 1853, 7162/1853, relating to accounts of [Henry Place], Collector of the Poor Rate for Sutton in Ashfield. Goodacre encloses a copy of a report on a committee appointed by the guardians to investigate the matter.
The report, signed by the chairman [George Walkden], states that the committee agrees that the books are not kept in accordance with the General Order of Accounts, but the committee state it would be very difficult for the money matter to be conformed with in so poor and heavily rated a parish as that of Sutton in Ashfield. The committee state that in their opinion the rates have been regularly collected. The committee go on to state that improper persons have been appointed to the office of overseer and in the present instance neither of the overseers can write their own names.
