Folios 602-603. Letter from J M Spencer, Relieving Officer, First District, Mansfield Poor Law Union, to the Poor Law Board, replying to letter dated 1 March 1853 7068/1853. Spencer explains that the first irregularity arose because he was away from home performing extra duties ordered by the guardians. The reason for the book being balanced in pencil was because he did not understand fully the different mode for balancing the bread contractor's account, which had been suggested at his last audit in January last.
Annotated: the auditor reported no defect in Spencer's books at the audit for the half year until Michaelmas last.
Spencer's explanation is incorrect. Ask for a detailed statement of the extra duties mentioned.
Paper Number: 7651/1853.
Poor Law Union Number: 337.
Counties: Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire.
