Folio 211. Letter from W E Goodacre, Clerk to the Guardians of the Mansfield Poor Law Union, to the Poor Law Board, asking for sanction under the 6th article of the Prohibitory Order to the continuance for six weeks longer of 1s and 4lb of bread per week out relief for George Shin, able bodied widower with five children from 11 to 2 years of age. He is a stocking maker and earns just 10s per week. The relief is given due to his circumstances as a widower with a young family requiring a great deal of looking after.
Annotated: at a meeting of the guardians this case came up and John Manwaring, Poor Law Inspector was informed it had been frequently reported to the Board and the relief sanctioned. If this is not the case the clerk must be informed and reminded of his duty in such cases. The Board can sanction the relief for six weeks more.
Also annotated: 'I have looked back to the year 1848 but I cannot find that the case of George Shin has been reported before'.
Further annotated: sanction for six weeks but state the case has not previously been reported to the Board.
