Folios 206-207. Letter from Henry Place, Collector, Sutton in Ashfield [Mansfield Poor Law Union], to the Poor Law Board, acknowledging receipt of their letter of 9 April, 14692/1851 stating that a petition had been sent by the overseers regarding the Small Tenements Rating Act. As the overseers know nothing of the petition he states it must have 'emanated from parties who made an unauthorized use of their name'. The overseers know of no grievance arising from the adoption of the act, on the contrary they think it has done good.
The class of [dissolute] people who formerly go onto the [excused] list and are now compelled by their landlords to pay part of the rates, have tried to raise a [clamour] against it as it deprives them of their vote in vestry. He states that these people disfranchise themselves anyway before the adoption of the act by not paying their rates.
