Description

Folios 101-102. Letter from William Barnes and John Aked, overseers, Sutton in Ashfield, Mansfield Poor Law Union, to the Poor Law Board. On 5 May 1864, Barnes and Aked had been asked by the assessment committee to help in compiling a new valuation list of the parish, but on comparing this with the old valuation list, it was found that 30 acres were not accounted for. The new valuation list was simply a copy of the Rate Book, which itself had been copied from the old valuation book. This last had been altered in many ways over the past 20 years without references being made, and it was impossible to correct the many errors.

The committee had therefore asked Barnes and Aked to measure all the cottage gardens in order to find the extent of each holding, this column having been left blank in the old valuation book. There had never been a map of the parish, and it seemed that one was now necessary, so the overseers called a vestry meeting at which the ratepayers agreed that the Board be asked to issue an order [for a survey and map], the cost being paid in yearly instalments. The application is attached [not included].

Annotated: under 6& 7 Vict c 96 s 3, the application must come from the board of guardians. W G L [William Golden Lumley, Assistant Secretary to the Poor Law Board].

Paper Number: 20528/1864.

Poor Law Union Number: 337.

Counties: Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire.
