Description

Folios 493-494. Letter from W E Goodacre, Clerk to the Guardians of the Mansfield Poor Law Union, to the Poor Law Board, referring to their letters of 24 August 1860 and 12 October 1860, 29713/1860. Goodacre informs the Board that Frances Foxton's husband has applied to the relieving officer for a medical order to have her restrained. The relieving officer and Doctor Powell, [Edward Powell, Medical Officer], visited Foxton and Powell did not certify her to be removed to an asylum. Previously Foxton has been subdued with ordinary treatment. Two of her brothers are in an asylum as violent and dangerous lunatics.

Annotated: Mr Lumley. State that if the woman was not a pauper the guardians have nothing to do with the case. Whether Powell has any claim against the board or any other person is a question upon which this Board cannot express any opinion. If [she had been] a pauper, Article 205, number 3 of the General Order would apply. WGL [William Golden Lumley, Assistant Secretary to the Poor Law Board].

Paper Number: 36593/1860.

Poor Law Union Number: 337.

Counties: Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire.
