Description

Petition for pardon of Sir Thomas Calder of Muirtown [Muirton, Muirtone, Jacobite] prisoner in Carlisle [Cumberland], former tenant of [Alexander] Marquise of Huntley [signs Huntly], aka Duke of Gordon, stating that he'd deserted Huntly, and surrendered to Lord Lovat, before 'the Pretender' [James Francis Edward Stuart] landed.

Enclosing:

1. Letter from Huntly to Charles Gordon of Tillachoudie, stating that Sir Thomas Calder and Thomas Tulloch of Tanachie [Tanachies, Tannachies], are to be ordered to accompany him 'in this expedition'. Dated 26 September 1715 at Gordon Castle [Aberdeenshire].

2. Declaration of Simon, Lord Lovat in favour of Calder. Dated 5 November 1716.

3. Certificate of Huntly in favour of Calder. Dated 8 November 1716.

4. Affidavit of Robert Young and John Calder of Findorn [Findhorn, Morayshire], mentioning Gordon of Tullchowdie, Captain of Huntly's horse. Dated 24 December 1716 at Carlisle.

5. Affidavit of John Dunbar, sheriff deputy of Morayshire, vouching for Calder, and verifying the handwriting contained in numerous documents related to petition. Dated 29 December 1716.

6. Affidavit of David Dunbar of Elgin, Morayshire, as above. Dated 29 December 1716.

7. Declaration by magistrates of Forres, Morayshire, that Calder was not a Jacobite, with 39 signatures. Dated 21 September 1716 at Forres.

8. Tenancy agreement between Huntly, and Sir Thomas Calder and Thomas Tulloch, mentioning William Baine, and 'ye towns and lands of Mickle & Litle Breacklachs' [Milton of Braicklaich, Petty parish, Inverness-shire, Nairnshire?] and Labrach parish. Dated 8 March 1715 at Gordon Castle.

9. Affidavit of William Cumings, of Craige Miln Morayshire, and James Winchester, minister of Rafford [Morayshire], verifying the handwriting contained in numerous documents related to petition. Dated 29 December 1716.

10. Declaration of Simon Lord Lovat in favour of Calder. Dated 9 December 1716 at Inverness [Inverness-shire].

11. Declaration of Alexander Erskine, Aexr [Alexander] Brodie, and James Lidderdaile, customs officers at Inverness, in favour of Thomas Tulloch of Tanochie and Sir Thomas Calder of Muirton, mentioning the vessel the Samuell of Queensferry [Fife, Flintshire?] James Burn master from Christiansand [Kristiansand] in Norway'. Dated 12 July 1716.

12. Affidavits of James Roy, merchant of Forres Morayshire, and William Gairdine att Milne of Moy [Morayshire?] outlining details in 11 and mentioning Gordon of Barnes. Dated 10 December 1716.
