Description

Petition for mercy of Walter Graham, merchant and burgess of Dundee [Angus, and prisoner in the Tolbooth at Edinburgh].

Enclosing:

1. Declaration in favour of Hay by the burgesses of Dundee, with seals and sixty-three signatures. Dated 14 September 1716.

2. Instrument of protest for wrongful imprisonment, issued for Graham against George Drummond, keeper of the Tolbooth at Edinburgh. Mentions Duncan Forbes and Sir James Steuart, advocate deputy. Dated 23 August 1716.

3. Letters of liberation against the magistrates of Edinburgh and keepers of the Tolbooth. Mentions James Naiper, messenger, James Steuart, John Lothian, public notary, and William Montgomery. Signed Alexander Ross, and Cha [Charles] Kinross macer. Dated 1716 August 23.

4. Declaration from [George] Yeaman, merchant and late provost of Dundee, that Graham was not a [Jacobite] artillery officer. Dated 14 September 1716.

5. Declaration of William Austin, provost of Perth, concerning a receipt shown him by Graham for 'redelivery of four big iron cannon to the town'. Dated 19 September 1716.

6. Certification, by James Grahame the younger, of George Yeaman's handwriting, and the signature of Patrick Ogilvy of Balfour [Aberdeenshire?]. Dated 24 December 1716.

7. Affidavits of wheelwright and joiner Andrew Scot [signs Scott], mariner John Bruce, boatman William Wood, boatman James Karie [?], merchant Alexr [Alexander] Graham, merchant George Ramsay, and merchant Thomas Fairweather, all of Dundee, stating that Graham was ordered, by William Ramsay, to take the cannon to Perth [Perthshire] by boat.
