Description

Folios 165-167. A report from Robert Weale, Assistant Poor Law Commissioner, to the Poor Law Board, in respect of the state of mind of Jeremiah Allen, Collector of Poor Rates for Sutton-in-Ashfield, [Mansfield Poor Law Union]. Weale states that he had been present at the board of guardians, the previous day when the letter from the Commission on the above subject was read. He says that he saw Allen himself and from his manner and conversation he could form no other opinion of him, other than he was insane. He endeavoured to prevail on him to resign his office, but he said he should wait for the Commission's dismissal. Weale advises that he, afterwards, saw his (Allen's) medical attendant, who concurred with him in his opinion as to the state of his mind. He annexed a certificate the medical attendant gave him on the subject, and advised that an order of dismissal be issued forthwith. Weale informs that the parish of Sutton-in-Ashfield is in arrears with the guardians. The overseers took possession of the rate book, and on his advice, have determined to commence the collection of the rates themselves.

Also enclosed is a report from Nathan Cooper, Medical Officer, who states that he has seen Mr J Allen very frequently of late and had known and attended him for many years. From such observations he stated that he had no hesitation in saying that his present habits and state of mind is such as to prevent him from properly discharging his duties, especially as similar habits have previously rendered him insane.
