Doris May LESSING, aliases Dorothy LESSING, Doris May WISDOM, Doris May TAYLER: Southern Rhodesian, British. Doris LESSING first came to notice in the early 1940s controlling (with her then German husband) the Salisbury Left Club in Southern Rhodesia. She moved to Britain in 1949. By 1953 at the latest had joined the Communist Party of Great Britain (CPGB) and was involved with its Writers' Group and in 1954 was the Daily Worker's drama critic. In 1956 she visited the Central African Federation for several weeks, making a report to the CPGB. Later the same year she resigned from the Party following the Soviet invasion of Hungary, but remained active in the Movement for Colonial Freedom
